August 31, 1938 ~ February 14, 2021 (age 82)

Obituary

PRESCOTT, AZ – Joyce Marie Evans, 82, of Prescott, AZ, previously from Mullins, WV, died February 14, 2021. She was born August 31, 1938 in Mullins, WV.  She was the daughter of Leonard and Kathleen Roach of Mullins, WV.

Joyce graduated Magna Cum Laude from Campbell College (now Campbell University) in Buies Creek, NC with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1977. She worked 23 years in healthcare as a Medical Technologist for the Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC). She was also a United States Army Veteran having served during the Vietnam Conflict. She was Honorably Discharged from the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) with a Specialist Five rank. After retiring from VAMC, Joyce was known for giving back to the community through her Hospice Volunteering at Granite Mountain in Prescott, AZ. She always put her children and family first and had an extreme love of animals. She was dedicated to her grandchildren and encouraged them to be their best. Joyce was a devout Christian and started singing at very early age for the Mullins Pentecostal Holiness Church. Later in life, she converted to Episcopalian and instilled those Christian values in her children. She never met a stranger and was always willing to help anyone in need. She will be sorely missed by her family and friends. We are extremely appreciative of God’s Will that she did not have to suffer longer with her Multiple Myeloma diagnosis.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Kathleen Roach and ex-husband and close friend, John Evans.

She is survived by her Sister, Jeanne Suddarth of Chapel Hill, NC; Son, Edward Blackwell (Hollie) of Four Oaks, NC and daughter Amy Thein (Heath) of Prescott, AZ;  Grandchildren, Brynn Thein, Trace Thein, and Leah Blackwell; Niece Betsy Suddarth Penland, of Morganton, NC, Nephew Sterling Suddarth of Greensboro, NC, Niece Deborah Kopytowski of Chapel Hill, NC and Nephew Thomas Henry Suddarth III of Goldsboro, NC; ex-husband and close friend, William Blackwell of Sun City West, AZ.
